Powerful PlayPlay at Work

I wasn't at all surprised when I read an article in my local newspaper stating the obvious. More than one million Canadians (or about one in 12) aren't happy at work, and that mental health experts are warning employers to start paying attention to those disgruntled workers.

Isn't it really all about happy employees? 100% of employees I surveyed agree that they all can use more fun at work, generate more excitement and energy, and create a dynamic team of individuals working together as partners in the company's success. Play at work creates a positive energy exchange between people and results in everyone feeling more energized. The atmosphere at work is much more appealing, and management reports to me that the sense of camaraderie is many times more obvious and prevalent in their workplace.

Creating a healthy organization in the workplace is fast becoming a competitive advantage in today's world of work. Position your company as the “Employer of Choice.” Show your staff how important they are. It's amazing how people will look past communication and personality-style differences when they're enjoying themselves at work, having fun and laughing. People begin to see and appreciate qualities in their colleagues they had never witnessed before. Through the sheer magic of playing together we create a feeling of community in which people are truly connected, operating more effectively with each other and celebrating their work achievements.

Note to Self: October is officially designated “Canada's Healthy Workplace Month” and is designed to introduce workplace health to Canadian organizations, and to support those who are already on the journey. www.healthyworkplacemonth.ca

Powerful PlayFinancially Powerful

Powerful Play Experiences acknowledges Steve Palaschuk, Financial Consultant, for being the inspiration to write this story. Steve is in the business of coaching families on simple financial concepts that will help them put their money to work more effectively and move them toward achieving their financial goals.

“A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.” - Ecclesiastes 10:19, King James Bible

Money. It conjures up anxieties, worries and fear in us. Money’s power over us can affect our relationships, our dreams, and our day to day life. For true, sustainable happiness we need to have power over our money instead of it having power over us.

It is important, through awareness and education, to shed those bad habits of equating success with money, prestige, titles and “stuff”. There are those who do have money yet live as if they don’t, protectively holding it close in fear of losing it, and there are those who don’t have money yet live as if they do, for the sake of appearances or self-gratification. We have a right to abundance, however, it is important to have a solid understanding and respect for money in order to have power over it.

With power comes freedom: Freedom to enjoy: Freedom to indulge: Freedom to play.

We must tell ourselves that we want more out of life and commit ourselves to doing something about it. We need to know ourselves, our unique talents, and what we enjoy...add a little passion and patience and that self-awareness will blossom into personal success, peace, the feeling of being in power, reduced stress, and a more light-hearted approach to life and to play.

Powerful PlayFacially Powerful

I fully endorse taking steps to INCREASING MY PLAY FOOTPRINT at my particular workplace environment and vow to leave my mark by organizing “Fake Moustache Day.”

Why “Fake Moustache Day?” As a baby I was unable to grow a moustache due to a very rare genetic disorder - "Nomoustachia Untilpubertyosis". I grew up with the constant feeling of being incomplete. Eventually I filled this dark, desolate, void when I discovered a passion for drawing moustaches onto photographs of small children and cats. Sure they were only photographs but I honestly believed how much more fun the subjects were having with their new found lady-ticklers.

In my late teen years through hard work and determination, I over-came my debilitating disorder and grew my own crumb-catcher. However, as my youth slipped away, so did my passion for the moustache photos. Then abruptly at age 32, it was completely crushed when I was thrust out of my parents' basement and forced into the cold, cruel, world called life. I had to get a job.

Years passed and I survived. My job became a big part of my life, in fact my job was great, but something was missing from the workplace – Fun. I happened to attend a Powerful Play Experiences workshop where Robert Manolson constantly stressed the importance of fun at work. But what could I do? Suddenly my inner child was re-ignited as I recalled painting a nicely waxed Fu-Manchu onto my sister's baby portraits. Of course! FAKE MOUSTACHE DAY! Where my coworkers would be able to experience the same fun as my touched up portraits, relax, laugh, and play, all with the help of a tiny piece of plastic.

quoteWhat a great stress relief. This session tantalized the child within right from the get go with the colourful displays and playful atmosphere. You had to make the mental decision to let yourself go and get into the games and activities...without reserve. I came out feeling relaxed and, more importantly, reminded of the value of incorporating fun and humor in our daily work activities.quote
